About The Symphony

The Symphony is Medela’s hospital-grade electric pump. It is fairly lightweight compared to other pumps in its class (weighing just about 7lbs), is made for convenient daily use, and can be used for single or double pumping. Like all Medela pumps, the Symphony features “2-Phase Expressions Technology”, which was developed to imitate the natural nursing motions of a baby. This allows the Symphony to extract milk in greater quantities and with more speed than its competitors. It is able to be powered by plug or with two internal rechargeable batteries for use on the go.

What is “Hospital Grade”?

Since the term is not officially approved by the FDA, it can be hard to define exactly what a hospital grade breast pump is. However, in general, it is a pump that can be used for multiple mothers because accessories can be purchased separately. Click here to read more about hospital grade breast pumps.

Pros & Cons Explained

Comfort

While The Symphony can certainly be comfortable, you may need to try out various kits to find the one that fits perfectly for you.

Price

While The Symphony is certainly pricey, it offers the greatest quality in terms of noise output, mobility, and ease of use in its category. There are also a number of rental options if you do not want to purchase it outright, or payment plans and financing if you do.

Quality

Medela’s 2-Phase Expression technology has been proven to get 18% more milk when double pumping, and allows users to achieve faster milk ejection with better flow than other competitors. The option to alternate between single and double pumping is also a plus, and the hands-free option and low noise output of the unit make it easy to pump at work or on the go.

Noise

The Symphony has a surprisingly low noise output, and it is one of the quietest options in its class. This is great for mothers who need to pump at work or in other public places where a noisy pump could be a nuisance to others.
